Verse 1.
Three hundred men were working in the depths of the St.
Paul Mine without a thought of danger or fear of any kind,
their hearts were filled with gladness no dream of death so near,
Until the cry of fire rang upon their startled ears.

Chorus
Oh what means that sound like thunder that went sweeping through the town?
The St Paul Mine on fire (and) men are burning under ground.
Then a wail went up from mothers, wives and children all around
they rushed in frantic terror to the shaft above the ground.

Verse 2.
The men they fought like demons, and tried to escape from the Mine,
They would not heed the heroes who begged them not to lose their minds,
they rushed like maddened cattle, until they sank to die,
Oh God have mercy on those souls that perished in the mine.
